History

The Yoga Room Gisborne is steeped in history and tradition, and has served as a place of sanctuary and learning since 1991.

Established in the early 1990’s by Judy Colbert, The Yoga Room was first situated in the Gladstone Road building it still occupies today. Its first incarnation was as a single room that was previously the Natural Therapy Clinic run by David Timbs.

Soon after The Yoga Room opened, a then unknown Peter Sanson returned from his yoga studies in India and travelled home to Gisborne to teach yoga in the Ashtanga tradition. Judy was Peter’s first student and she continues to teach at The Yoga Room.

When the room became too small the studio moved to its present position. More teachers came on board and the second room was opened around 2003. A number of wonderful teachers have been based at The Yoga Room over the years, including Peter Sanson, Mike and Victoria Bergan, Ruth Dudding and Wendy Glasgow.

Peter’s influence has been fundamental to the success and longevity of The Yoga Room. In the early days he would return to Gisborne to teach between frequent trips to India to study with his guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Peter is now an internationally acclaimed Ashtanga teacher and his annual Christmas Ashtanga workshops at The Yoga Room attract a devoted crowd from around New Zealand and overseas.

We feel blessed to have such a dynamic group of teachers on board to take The Yoga Room forward with fresh energy and a shared passion for yoga in its many forms.
