For new people starting yoga what you need to know
About starting yoga classes for the beginner
So starting a yoga class when there is so many different styles out there where do you ever start. Gisborne has so many studios so how do you choose a teacher that is right for you. Would you deposit your money in any bank without knowing a few details.
I have been teaching beginners yoga for over 20 years and my class now is very different from my class 10 years ago.
Yoga is an art that will change the very way you live your life. Not only your life but also those around you. Your family, friends your community your country and all of humanity. Your teacher is giving the student a gift passing on their knowledge of what they have learnt from their teacher. It is continuous learning for your teacher. So take that gift with open arms practice practice and dont give up. For all the yoga teachers in this community Namaste
Here is a few tips
1 Is the teacher qualified, would be my first question because believe it or not to teach yoga in NZ you do not even need to know what yoga is. Not everyone has a qualification, so check and then you have that information to do what you want to.
2 Has your teacher got a currant teacher they go to and when did they last work with that teacher. Is your prospective teacher continuing to update their knowledge/practice on a yearly basis. Yoga teachers are learning all the time, as they develop their own practice
3 Does your teacher have a self practice which does not mean a practice during class time
4 Make sure you know what style class you are going to. I personally would not send a beginner to a hot yoga class an ashtanga class or a vinyasa flow and I would be cautious with a yin class that has no alignment. But thats me and that doesn’t mean don’t go but know sometimes in these classes you don’t get much instruction
5 Does the teacher ask you about injuries. I would consider not joining that class if you have lots of injuries and the teacher has no idea of adaptations
6. You need to feel confident with your teacher and like the style they are teaching, remember there are many styles one will suit you
7 Yoga is not about FLEXIBILITY. it doesn’t matter how stiff you are . The class should accomodate all sizes all shapes . There are class sometimes that are for different groups like pregnancy the older age group beginners, so you may need to do your homework and find out
8 The cost sometimes does make a difference so know what its going to cost you as yoga just isn’t a 4 week course end of story, its a life time practice.
I havnt covered everything but just a few tip. Finally enjoy and reap the many benefits that yoga can give you and keep reaping those benefits by not giving up
